Botox for wrinkle prevention

Updated: Aug 5, 2023

Everyone knows the term Botox and equates it with anti-aging. The name probably conjures up an image of a middle aged woman who’s trying to soften the lines in her forehead or around her eyes. The fact is, Botox can and should be used as a preventative measure for maintaining youthful skin. Women in their mid twenties are excellent candidates for neuromodulation. Let’s break down what Botox is and how it works to prevent the formation of static wrinkles.

Botox, or Onabotulinumtoxin A, is a form of Botulinum Toxin that works to weaken muscles by blocking nerve signals responsible for making them contract. Over time, the normal contraction of facial muscles pull the attached skin causing creases in the skin. While they may start out as superficial or dynamic creases, repetitive contraction ultimately results in static wrinkles- those that are visible even when your facial muscles are at “rest.” By weakening the muscles early on, we can prevent dynamic or superficial wrinkles from evolving into static wrinkles, which are not as easily treated or may require higher dosages of Botox.

Botox was approved by the FDA for cosmetic use in 2002 to treat frown lines, crows feet, and forehead lines in adults 18 years of age and older. Since then, it has become the #1 selling treatment of its kind.
